United Support of Artists for Africa (USA for Africa), the sponsor of 1986's HANDS ACROSS AMERICA event and 1985's "We Are The World Song" will sponsor an event commemorating the spirit, optimism and hope of the more than six million people who came together in the Hands Across America line in 1986. Original organizers, board members, staff members, dignitaries and celebrities will gather with the general public once again at the exact spot that where the California end of the Hands Across America originated, the Queen Mary in Long Beach, CA. And exactly 25 years later, at 12:00 noon PDT, they will once again hold hands, sing "We Are the World," "Hands Across America" and again express concern for the problems of hunger and homelessness here in America.
"We cannot celebrate because the problems of hunger and homelessness are still very much present here at home and around the world," said Larry Weinberg, the USA for Africa board member who is chairing the event. "But we hope to revive the spirit of care, concern and hope that were the hallmarks of the 1986 event and once again focus attention on the problems and the good people working to solve them in 2011. We hope a new generation may be inspired by revisiting that magical 1986 event."
The public event will begin at 11:30 AM with greetings from dignitaries and public officials, and will be over by 12:30 PM. Video from the 1986 gathering will be shown. The general public is invited but a special invitation is extended to those who participated in the 1986 event.
"We hope people will bring their photos and their memorabilia," said Marcia Thomas, executive director of USA for Africa. "Our commemoration will be festive and forward looking; we're hoping people will think about recommitting themselves to serve the cause."
The event is supported by a Fan Page on Facebook; it's called "Hands Across America 25th Anniversary", the URL is www.facebook.com/handsacrossamerica.
