USA for AFRICA Makes Gift for Somalia Relief Efforts
STATEMENT BY THE BOARD OF UNITED SUPPORT OF ARTISTS FOR AFRICA
Today we stand in solidarity and support of the people of Somalia who are suffering from a growing drought and famine in the besieged East African country. This growing humanitarian disaster is driving thousands of Somalians to neighboring countries. We have authorized a grant of $10,000 to be given to the "Operation USA" that will enable the purchase and delivery of one million water purification tablets that will help save the lives of Somalians.
We have partnered with Los Angeles-based Operation USA before, most recently when we made a similar contribution after the earthquake disaster in Haiti in 2010. We will endeavor to make further funds available. Like USA for Africa itself, Operation USA was founded in the mid 1980s to help with famine relief in sub-Saharan Africa. The deterioration of conditions in Somalia has led to a sad but necessary call to action to provide aid yet again in Africa. While we are proud of the work our organization and others have done to grow the local capacity of Africans to deal with the issues of poverty and food security, there is still a need to act and to help. We urge others to be generous and act quickly.
